Payment guidance checked against official sources
How to Pay in China as a Foreigner
Prepare one mobile wallet, one independent card or cash backup, and a recovery plan before you need to pay. If a transaction is unclear, stop and check the wallet, merchant, and bank before trying again.
Choose the situation you are in
Prepare Alipay or WeChat Pay, test one small purchase, and keep a separate backup.
Start the setup checklist →02At the counterMy payment is not workingChoose what happened and follow a cautious check-first recovery path.
Diagnose the failure →03Transaction unclearI may have paid twiceCompare the wallet, merchant, and bank records before paying or requesting a refund.
Check the transaction →What can you already use?
Choose one option. This is a preparation route, not a guarantee that every merchant or transaction will accept it.
Prepare Alipay or WeChat Pay with an eligible international card, and keep a card from a different issuer or RMB cash as backup.
Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover are listed in the official guide, but wallet, issuer, merchant, fee and limit conditions can differ.
Finish current identity and card setup in the official app, then test a small purchase after arrival.
A linked card does not guarantee every transaction. Keep account recovery, issuer alerts and an independent backup ready.
Check whether your existing wallet supports cross-border QR payments in mainland China before departure.
Officially listed examples are shown below. App eligibility, merchant acceptance, limits and fees can change.
- AlipayHK
- WeChat Pay HK
Check the wallet’s current China payment entry and complete any identity or card steps before departure.
Officially listed examples are shown below. Do not assume every QR code or merchant supports your wallet.
- Kakao Pay
- Naver Pay
- Toss Pay
Check the wallet’s current China payment entry, supported funding source and travel limits before departure.
Officially listed examples are shown below. Availability varies by wallet, country, merchant and transaction.
- Touch ’n Go eWallet
- Changi Pay
- OCBC
- TrueMoney
- GCash
Carry small RMB notes as an independent backup and ask for change and a receipt.
Cash is a useful fallback, but many everyday journeys start with mobile payment. Prepare one electronic route too.
Start with one official mobile wallet, one eligible international card and a small amount of RMB cash.
Complete identity checks before departure and test only a small purchase first. Never keep retrying an unclear transaction.

Build two independent ways to pay before you land
A linked card is only one checkpoint. Make the account recoverable, finish current verification, enable bank alerts, and test a small real payment after arrival before relying on it for a hotel deposit or long journey.
Ready means more than linked
- 01Official app installed
- 02Reachable phone number and account recovery
- 03Current identity checks completed
- 04Eligible card added and issuer alerts enabled
- 05Small real payment checked in wallet and bank
- 06Separate card or RMB cash backup
Alipay for foreigners
Use the current official app flow to register, verify identity, add an eligible international card, and review any fee or limit before approval.
- Use your own reachable number and real identity details.
- Confirm whether to scan the merchant code or show your payment code.
- Wait for one clear result and check transaction history before retrying.
WeChat Pay for foreigners
Use the current official WeChat flow and treat phone, card, verification, merchant support, fee, and limit screens as the source of truth.
- Protect account recovery before travel.
- Set up payment only inside the official app.
- Keep Alipay, a separate card, or cash as an independent fallback.
Cards, cash, and ATM backup
Direct foreign-card acceptance varies by merchant. Keep RMB cash and know how to find a staffed bank or ATM that supports your card network.
- Tell your issuer about travel only through its official channel.
- Keep more than one bank or card network when practical.
- Ask which method is accepted before ordering or approving a deposit.
Payment not working? Start with the symptom, not a guess
These are cautious checks, not a diagnosis of your bank or wallet. The current app screen, merchant record, and card issuer remain authoritative.
I cannot add my card
The card, name, verification, region, or issuer may not match the wallet’s current requirements.
- Read the exact wallet error.
- Check name and identity details.
- Ask the issuer whether the card supports this transaction type.
Use another eligible card from a different issuer or your cash backup.
Do not send card photos, security codes, or passport images to an unofficial helper.
I cannot receive the verification code
The phone number format, roaming, SMS delivery, account lock, or current verification step may be blocking setup.
- Confirm the full country code and reachable number.
- Check roaming and blocked SMS.
- Use only the official resend or recovery flow.
Recover the account on a stable connection or use your independent payment method.
Do not create repeated accounts with fake or borrowed numbers.
My card is linked, but payment is declined
Linked does not mean every merchant or transaction is eligible. The issuer, wallet, verification, limit, or merchant route may have declined it.
- Read the exact decline message.
- Check bank alerts and app verification prompts.
- Confirm the amount and merchant with staff.
Call the issuer through its official number, or use a different issuer and funding route.
Do not keep tapping Pay or retry the same card without checking the first attempt.
I scanned the QR code but cannot pay
The code may be for a different flow, expired, unsupported for this card, or waiting for the merchant to enter the amount.
- Ask whether to scan their code or show your code.
- Confirm merchant and amount.
- Check whether the first attempt appears in history.
Restart the correct official flow once, or use a confirmed backup method.
Do not assume a QR page or frozen screen proves failure.
My bank shows a charge
It may be a completed charge, a pending authorization, or a wallet transaction the merchant has not matched yet.
- Check wallet status and transaction ID.
- Ask the merchant to search by amount and time.
- Check whether the bank entry is pending or completed.
Save evidence and contact the wallet or issuer through official support if records disagree.
Do not pay again until you understand whether the merchant received the first payment.
The wallet says failed
A failed wallet message can still sit beside a temporary bank authorization; the merchant may or may not have a completed transaction.
- Ask the merchant whether they received it.
- Check bank alerts and wallet history.
- Wait for one stable status.
When merchant, wallet, and bank all show failure or no receipt, switch to a separate method.
Do not treat a bank notification alone as proof of a completed charge.
I am not sure what happened
The three records may update at different times or show different wording.
- Save the merchant, amount, time, and screen.
- Check wallet history.
- Ask the merchant, then check the bank entry.
Use the transaction checker below and contact the record owner whose data disagrees.
Do not retry simply because the checkout screen disappeared.
Did I pay twice? Compare wallet → merchant → bank
This checker cannot confirm a charge or promise a refund. It only organizes the records so you know what to verify and who to contact.
This tool runs only in your browser. Do not enter card numbers, codes, passport details, or transaction IDs.
Possible duplicate or two bank records
Two bank entries need matching against wallet transaction IDs and merchant receipts. One may still be pending.
- Look for one or two wallet transaction IDs.
- Ask whether the merchant has one or two completed receipts.
- Check whether both bank entries are completed.
If two completed payments match two merchant receipts, ask the merchant for a refund reference; otherwise contact the wallet or issuer whose record disagrees.
Do not demand or promise a refund until two completed payments are confirmed.
The transaction is still pending
At least one wallet record has not reached a final status.
- Keep the screen and transaction ID.
- Ask whether the merchant received it.
- Check the bank entry without refreshing or retrying payment.
Wait for an official final status or contact wallet support if it remains unresolved.
Do not pay again only because the merchant screen is slow.
The three records are consistent with one payment
Wallet success, merchant receipt, and one bank entry point to one completed transaction.
- Match amount and time.
- Keep the receipt.
- Confirm the bank entry belongs to the same transaction.
No recovery action is normally needed unless the amount or merchant is wrong.
Do not start a duplicate-charge claim based only on a delayed notification.
Wallet says success, but merchant receipt is unclear
The merchant may not have matched the payment yet, or the records may disagree.
- Show the transaction ID, amount, and time.
- Ask the merchant to search its payment record.
- Check whether the bank entry is pending or completed.
Contact the wallet if the merchant cannot find a successful wallet transaction.
Do not pay again until the merchant and wallet records are checked.
Wallet failed, but the bank may show an entry
The bank entry could be a temporary authorization or a record that needs issuer review.
- Confirm the wallet says failed.
- Ask whether the merchant received anything.
- Check whether the bank entry is pending.
Save the evidence and ask the issuer how it classifies the specific entry.
Do not call it a completed charge from a notification alone.
Records are consistent with a failed attempt
Wallet failed, merchant did not receive it, and the bank shows no entry.
- Check the amount and time once more.
- Keep the error screen.
- Confirm no transaction appears in wallet history.
Use one independent backup method.
Do not repeat the same failing route several times.
Merchant and bank indicate one payment
The merchant says it received one payment and the bank shows one entry, even if the wallet wording is unclear.
- Get a receipt or order number.
- Match the amount and time.
- Keep the wallet screen.
Treat the merchant receipt as evidence and ask the wallet only if its history remains wrong.
Do not pay again without a specific mismatch.
The records do not yet agree
There is not enough consistent information to classify the attempt.
- Save all three screens or notes.
- Ask the merchant first.
- Check wallet history and bank status.
Contact the owner of the conflicting record: merchant, wallet, or issuer.
Do not retry or request a refund before identifying the completed record.
Save this evidence
- Wallet status and transaction ID
- Merchant name, amount, date, and time
- Receipt or order number
- Bank entry marked pending or completed
- Refund reference if the merchant submitted one
A pending bank entry is not automatically a completed charge. A merchant refund reference is not a guaranteed arrival date. Only the wallet, merchant, and issuer can confirm their own records.
If the main method fails, switch only after checking it
Keep every fallback independent enough that one account, phone, card, or network problem cannot block all of them.
- 01
Use the other wallet only if it was already verified.
- 02
Try a card from a different issuer or network.
- 03
Ask whether a physical foreign card is accepted.
- 04
Pay with RMB cash and ask for change and a receipt.
- 05
Withdraw cash at a compatible ATM or ask a staffed bank for help.
Show the merchant one clear sentence
Keep your phone in your hands. Show only the payment result, amount, or order reference—never a password, one-time code, full card number, or security code.
Copying stores only the Chinese sentence on your device.

Payment questions
Can foreigners use Alipay in China?
Many visitors can use the current official Alipay setup with an eligible international card, but identity checks, card support, merchant routes, fees, and limits can change. Verify the live app and your issuer.
Can foreigners use WeChat Pay in China?
Current official visitor guidance supports eligible foreign users and cards, but account, card, merchant, fee, and limit conditions vary. Complete setup before relying on it.
Should I rely only on cash in China?
No. Cash is a useful independent backup, but many everyday journeys begin with mobile payment. Prepare one working electronic route and one separate backup.
What if my foreign card is declined in China?
Stop retrying, read the exact wallet message, check issuer alerts and transaction history, then use a different issuer or cash only after the first attempt is clear.
How long does a China payment refund take?
There is no single safe promise. Ask the merchant or wallet for a refund reference, then ask your issuer how it displays and processes that specific refund.
How do Indian tourists pay in China?
Indian travelers should use the same check-first plan: complete an eligible official wallet setup before travel, confirm international usage and authentication with the issuing bank, and keep an independent card or RMB cash backup. Support can vary by card, wallet, merchant, fee, and transaction.
