How to Order Food in China

Ordering food in China as a foreigner changes by situation: restaurant, delivery, or street food — choose where you are and follow the steps.

Start with your situation

Where are you ordering food in China?

Quick answer

How do people order food in China?

There is no single foreigner-only ordering route. In a restaurant, you may scan a table QR code, use a paper menu, or ask staff to enter the order. For hotel or home delivery, a major platform or mini-program usually needs an account, phone verification, a precise Chinese address, payment, and a way to reach you. At a food court or street stall, the reliable pattern is point → confirm → pay → collect. Platform language, phone-number support, card acceptance, and hotel delivery rules can vary, so treat the visible order result and the property’s instructions as the final check.

Path 1 · Eat at the table

How to order food at a restaurant in China

Use the menu and the staff as two sources of information. A translation can make the question clearer; the restaurant still has to confirm what is in the dish and how it was prepared.

  1. Get seated and find the table number

If the restaurant uses a table QR code, a table number or a counter ticket, note it before you start. Ask staff where the order is submitted if the screen is unfamiliar.

  2. Scan the QR code or ask for a paper menu

Open the table menu or request a printed menu. Take a clear photo of the dishes you are considering so you can compare the order with what arrives.

  3. Understand the dish before choosing it

Check the main ingredients, cooking method, soup or stock, spice, portion, and whether the dish is shared. Do not treat a familiar English label or a food photo as a complete ingredient list.

  1. Confirm dietary needs one question at a time

Separate preferences from safety questions: “less spicy” is a preference, while “I cannot eat peanuts” needs a direct confirmation about ingredients and preparation. If the answer stays unclear, choose a simpler dish.

    Prepare useful Chinese phrases
  2. Review, submit, and confirm payment

Repeat the dish, quantity, spice request, and any essential restriction. Submit the order only when the restaurant has answered the point that matters, then wait for one clear payment result.

Preference · less spice

Please make it less spicy.
请少放辣椒。

A preference still needs to be checked when the dish arrives.
Safety question · ingredient confirmation

I cannot eat peanuts. Please confirm the ingredients and cooking method.
我不能吃花生,请确认食材和做法。

A written phrase helps you ask; it never guarantees a safe kitchen result.
Path 2 · Hotel or home delivery

How to order food delivery in China

Delivery is a chain of hand-offs: a route that accepts your account, an address the rider can find, a payment method that actually succeeds, and a property rule for where the food is left.

  1. Choose a route that is available to you today

A major delivery app or an available mini-program may work, but the current sign-in, language, location, phone, and payment options are platform- and account-dependent. Use the official app or mini-program, not a workaround that asks for someone else’s identity.

Set up essential China travel apps
  2. Complete the account and phone verification required by that route

Some routes ask for a phone number and SMS code. A foreign number may work in one setup and fail in another; never use a fake number. If verification fails, ask the hotel or host about a legitimate ordering fallback.

  3. Add the exact Chinese property or building address

Copy the property’s Chinese name, road, building, floor or room instructions where appropriate, contact name, and a reachable phone. Ask the front desk for the exact address before you place the order, especially when a hotel has more than one branch.

  4. Review fees and substitutions, then confirm payment once

Check the dishes, quantity, delivery fee, service fee, substitutions, address, and contact details. Make one payment attempt and verify its status before trying again; a slow screen is not proof that payment failed.

    Prepare a China payment backup
  5. Track the hand-off and follow the property rule

Use in-app tracking or the order status when available. Hotels may use a lobby, front desk, locker, or designated hand-off point; follow the property’s current instruction and keep your saved rider message ready.

Legitimate delivery fallbacks

No supported phone number or failed SMS

Do not invent a number or borrow someone’s identity. Check whether the route offers another legitimate verification path, ask hotel staff to place the order, or choose an in-person option.

Payment looks stuck or fails

Check the order history, wallet, card, or bank notification first. Only retry after you know the first attempt did not succeed; if the platform rejects the method, use a legitimate alternative or ask the property for help.

The rider calls in Chinese

Paste the saved message into in-app text if available, show the Chinese address, or ask reception to speak with the rider. A rider may not be able to enter a room or wait indefinitely.

The address is wrong or incomplete

Pause the order and confirm the property’s exact Chinese address, branch, entrance, and delivery rule with the hotel or host. Correct the saved address before ordering again.

Path 3 · Counter, court, or stall

Keep this path visual and short. Point to the exact item, make the quantity and total explicit, then keep the number or receipt until the food is in your hands.

  1. Find the counter, kiosk, QR code, or displayed dishes

Look for the place where orders are taken and whether payment happens before or after collection.

  2. Point to the exact item

Use a photo, menu number, or translated dish name. If there are similar sizes or toppings, point to each one separately.

  3. Confirm quantity, spice, additions, and total price

Repeat the number of portions and ask staff to show the total when the exchange is fast or noisy.

  4. Pay and keep the collection number visible

Save the receipt, screen, or paper ticket until the order is called.

  5. Check the item before leaving when practical

Compare the dish, quantity, and requested change with the order. Ask immediately if something is missing or different.

Questions & recovery

Ordering Food in China FAQs

Open a question for the practical next step. These answers cover the same problems visitors often bring to Local Help.

The menu is only in Chinese

Take a clear photo, translate the few dishes you are considering, and ask one concrete question at a time. Use Dining at the restaurant menu-understanding step if you want help preparing the explanation and bilingual staff question.

I cannot confirm an important dietary restriction

Treat the dish as unconfirmed. Ask the restaurant about the specific ingredient, stock, sauce, shared oil, or preparation, and choose a simpler alternative if the answer remains unclear. A translated phrase cannot guarantee allergy safety.

The order or payment result is unclear

Stop and check the order history, wallet, card notification, or receipt before submitting the same order again. Keep the time, amount, and status for the platform or merchant’s official support.

The hotel will not accept a delivery at my room

Ask the property for its current lobby, front-desk, locker, or entrance hand-off rule. Update the Chinese delivery note before ordering; a rider cannot always enter the building.

Can I order food in China without a Chinese phone number?

When ordering food in China for delivery, sometimes a foreign number works, but the result depends on the current platform, account, carrier, and verification flow. Do not use a fake number. If SMS verification fails, ask the hotel or host for a legitimate fallback or choose an in-person option.

Can foreigners use Meituan or Ele.me?

Foreign visitors may find a route through a platform app or mini-program, but phone verification, language, payment, and account support are not identical for every user. Check the current sign-in and payment screens in the official route you are using.

Can food be delivered to a hotel in China?

Often, but the property decides where a rider can hand over food. Confirm the hotel’s exact Chinese address and whether delivery goes to the lobby, front desk, locker, entrance, or another point before ordering.

What if the delivery rider calls me?

Show or paste a short Chinese hand-off message, use in-app text if available, or ask reception to help. Keep the exact Chinese property address visible and do not assume the rider can enter the room or wait.

Can I pay with an international card?

Some payment products and merchants support overseas cards, but issuer verification, card network, transaction limits, fees, and platform rules vary. Check the current payment screen and keep a separate backup such as another eligible method or RMB cash.

Do food delivery apps always have an English interface?

No. Language availability can vary by app version, route, account, and screen. Prepare Chinese names and a short translation fallback instead of depending on an English interface.

How do I ask for less spice or explain an allergy?

Show one short Chinese sentence before ordering, then ask staff to confirm the specific ingredient and preparation. “Less spicy” is a preference; an allergy or strict restriction is a safety question. The restaurant must confirm the result.
